Alb - A traditional church garment with a long historical background. Loosely worn and usually held in place with a waist sash or cord.
Back Length - Usually refers to the actual robe length or size. Measured in inches from the top of the yoke (at the back) to the hemline.
Bell Sleeves - Special order sleeve construction on our deluxe pulpit and doctoral gowns. The blouse-like effect is achieved by attaching the other sleeve to the inner coat-style sleeve.
Cassock- A close fitting garment with a standing collar, available with a zipper or button closure. Popular with acolytes, ministers, and some choirs.
Cincture - A wide belt or sash cord worn around the waist. Usually worn with a ministerial cassock.
Hem - The edge of a garment (eg. the sleeve or body hem) which is doubled under and then sewn for a finished appearance
Panels - Usually refers to the vertical, main strips of material that highlight the front of the gown on each side of the closure.
Pleats - A flat fold in the material to allow for more body fullness.
Surplice - Usually a white (can be made in other colors) loose flowing outer garment worn over a cassock or drawstring skirt. Worn by choirs or ministers.
Velvet - Warp pile fabric with short cut close filling shaped to create an erect velvety pile. Latest quality has rayon pile.
Visa - A registered trademark of Milliken and Company for fabrics with the ability to release stains without pretreatment of any kind. Nationally advertised VISA is considered a unique quality fabric that offers superb, easy-care performance for all garments. Colors stay bright and white stays white. Little or no pressing required.
Yoke - The upper portion of a robe that lies over the shoulder of the wearer.
